Thatcham is a proper Berkshire town that feels more like a big village at times, with a close-knit community, easy access to nature, and a high street that still manages to hold its own. Tucked just east of Newbury, it's well-placed for commuters but still has that laid-back, slightly rural charm that's becoming harder to find. You'll find families, older locals, and newcomers all rubbing along nicely here, with walks along the canal, cosy pubs, and a few good spots for coffee helping things tick along comfortably.

The history of Thatcham runs deep—it's often cited as one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Britain, with archaeological finds dating back to Mesolithic times. The name itself comes from Saxon roots, and it was recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Taceham'. Over the centuries it developed as a market town, growing steadily but never exploding into anything too big. These days, it's home to around 25,000 people and has grown mainly as a residential hub, with some industry and business parks dotted around the edges. It still keeps that traditional feel, with the parish church of St Mary's standing at its heart and plenty of older buildings still lining the main routes through town.

There's a fair bit to see and do, especially if you like the outdoors. The Kennet and Avon Canal passes right by, and it's a lovely spot for walking or cycling. Nature lovers will enjoy Thatcham Reedbeds and the Nature Discovery Centre, which is brilliant for birdwatching and family-friendly trails. The high street has a mix of independents and familiar names, with cafés, pubs, and a decent mix of practical shops. Nearby you've got the ruins of Donnington Castle—great for a short walk with cracking views—and the National Trust's Basildon Park is only a short drive, with grand rooms, landscaped grounds, and good tea. Shaw House, just outside Newbury, is another local gem, full of 16th-century character.

Wider Berkshire offers plenty more if you're up for a day out. Windsor is the obvious pick, with its castle, parks and boat rides. Reading is great for shopping, concerts and riverside dining. Highclere Castle, aka Downton Abbey, is just a short trip west and offers an impressive look at aristocratic life. Newbury Racecourse is right on your doorstep too, if you fancy a flutter or just a bit of spectacle. Across the county you'll find stately homes, walks through the North Wessex Downs, and country pubs that haven't changed much in decades.

Getting to and from Thatcham is relatively easy. It's just off the A4 and not far from junction 13 of the M4, so car access is decent in all directions. The train station sits on the main line between Reading and Newbury, with services running into London Paddington and the West Country. Buses connect the town with Newbury and other nearby villages. Heathrow is the nearest airport, just under an hour by car, and Reading provides onward rail links if you're travelling further afield. Whether you're heading to London, Oxford, or just popping into Newbury for lunch, it's all very doable.

Berkshire is one of those counties that quietly does everything well. It's got history, greenery, good schools, easy transport, and a nice balance of town and country life. Whether you're wandering along the Thames in Henley, shopping in Reading, or tucking into a Sunday roast in a tucked-away village, there's a real variety to it all. It's a county with deep roots but one that still moves with the times. There's a bit of polish in places like Ascot and Windsor, but also plenty of earthy charm out in the countryside. All in all, it's easy to see why so many people end up staying put.
