Reading is one of those towns that often gets underestimated. It's lively, well-connected, and full of character once you scratch beneath the surface. Straddling the River Thames and the River Kennet, it's got that waterside buzz mixed with a proper town centre feel. You'll find big-name shopping, indie coffee shops, riverside bars, green parks, and a real mix of people—students, commuters, creatives, and long-time locals. It's not flashy, but it's got a confident, lived-in vibe that makes it easy to settle into.
Reading has roots going right back to Saxon times and grew into a major religious and trading centre by the medieval period. Reading Abbey, founded in 1121 by Henry I, was once one of the most important abbeys in the country. Henry himself is thought to be buried there. The town flourished with wool and cloth production, later becoming a hub for brewing and biscuit making—Huntley & Palmers being the most famous. These days, Reading's population is well over 170,000 and still growing, thanks in part to its tech and business sectors. It's got a real blend of history and modern industry, with Victorian terraces sitting next to glass office blocks and old abbey ruins tucked behind shopping centres.
There's loads to do in Reading, whether you're after a lazy afternoon or something more cultural. The Oracle shopping centre is a big pull, especially with its riverside restaurants and bars, but you've also got the independent scene around Friar Street and the Harris Arcade. Reading Museum is a great intro to local history, and the Abbey Ruins are quietly impressive once you're in among the stone walls. For green space, Forbury Gardens is right in the middle of it all, and the Thames Path offers a peaceful route out of the town. A short trip out takes you to Basildon Park, a National Trust property with acres of rolling parkland, or Greys Court near Henley with its walled gardens and Tudor touches. Silchester Roman Town is another hidden gem not far from the edge of town, and if you fancy a scenic boat trip, head to Caversham Lock and hop on the river.
Across Berkshire, you'll find even more worth visiting. Windsor's the obvious royal hotspot, with the castle, Long Walk, and parks offering a full day out. Newbury has its own charm, especially around the canal and racecourse, and Donnington Castle adds a bit of drama to the landscape. In between, you've got places like Dinton Pastures, Bucklebury Farm, and Wellington Country Park for family days out. The countryside stretches between the towns in all directions, dotted with walking trails, ancient woods, and tucked-away pubs.
Reading's big strength is how well it's connected. The train station is one of the busiest outside London, with direct services to Paddington, Oxford, Bristol, the South West, and even Gatwick Airport. The Elizabeth Line now stops here too, making commutes into London even easier. The M4 runs just south of town, and the A33 links up to Basingstoke. Heathrow is the nearest airport, around 40 minutes by road, while Gatwick and Southampton are both reachable. Local buses run all over the place, and the town centre's fairly easy to explore on foot or bike.
Berkshire is a county that doesn't shout about itself, but it's full of treasures. It's a mix of well-heeled towns, rural villages, riverside pubs, and serious history. Windsor gives it royal flair, but there's more to the county than castles and race days. You've got tech hubs like Reading and Bracknell, old market towns like Hungerford and Wokingham, and countryside that slips into the Chilterns or brushes up against Hampshire's woods. There's a bit of everything here—green space, good food, fast trains, and plenty of character.
