LEGOLAND Windsor Resort is one of those places that sparks excitement the moment you mention it—especially with kids in tow. Perched on a hill just outside the historic town of Windsor, this popular theme park is packed with rides, interactive displays, shows and, of course, all things LEGO. It's aimed mainly at families with children aged between 2 and 12, but there's enough charm and nostalgia to put a grin on just about anyone's face. You'll find yourself surrounded by oversized bricks, themed zones, and miniature versions of world-famous landmarks, all built from millions of LEGO pieces.
The park first opened its gates in 1996 on the site of the former Windsor Safari Park, and it didn't take long to become one of the UK's favourite family attractions. Owned by the Merlin Entertainments Group, it's part of the wider LEGOLAND brand that spans several countries. Over the years it's grown steadily—adding new rides, shows and themed areas like LEGO Ninjago World and DUPLO Valley. Today, LEGOLAND Windsor attracts over two million visitors a year, putting it firmly on the map as one of the top destinations for families in Britain.
The area surrounding LEGOLAND is pretty rich when it comes to things to do. Windsor itself is a lovely town with its winding streets, independent shops and famous castle—a proper day out in its own right. You've got Alexandra Gardens for riverside walks, boat trips along the Thames, and the lovely pedestrianised streets full of cafes and ice cream stands. If you're looking for something a bit grander, National Trust's Runnymede isn't far—it's the historic site of the signing of the Magna Carta. Also nearby, you've got the Savill Garden in Windsor Great Park and the elegant Frogmore House, which opens to the public at selected times.
Zooming out a bit, Berkshire's not short on attractions either. There's Basildon Park, a stately home with rolling countryside and woodland walks, or Cliveden just over the border—a National Trust gem with riverside gardens and history galore. Reading offers up culture, concerts, shops and the ruins of an old abbey. If you like race days, Ascot's not far either, with its world-famous racecourse. For something a bit more relaxed, the Thames Path winds its way through the county, giving endless options for a leisurely stroll or a waterside cycle.
Getting to LEGOLAND Windsor is pretty straightforward. If you're driving, you'll find it just a short distance off the M4, with plenty of clearly marked signs and on-site parking. For those using public transport, your best bet is to take a train to Windsor & Eton Central or Windsor & Eton Riverside, then hop on a local shuttle or taxi. The nearest major airport is Heathrow, which is less than half an hour away by road, so it's well placed for international visitors too. There are local buses running between Windsor and LEGOLAND during the season, which make things easy if you're staying nearby.
Berkshire's a bit of an all-rounder. It's a royal county with deep historical roots, but it's also a place that's constantly moving forward. You'll find castles and country houses rubbing shoulders with tech campuses and market towns. The riverside villages feel a world away from city life, while Reading buzzes with events and nightlife. There's a good blend of green spaces and things to do, and wherever you end up, you're rarely more than a few miles from something worth seeing.
