Windsor is one of those towns that effortlessly blends regal grandeur with everyday charm. Sitting right on the banks of the Thames and just outside London, it draws in visitors from all over, thanks to its famous castle, riverside walks, and handsome streets lined with shops, cafes and pubs. It's not just about the history either—there's a modern, upbeat feel to the place, with plenty going on throughout the year and a strong sense of community ticking away beneath the tourist trail.

The town's history is deeply entwined with the monarchy, thanks largely to Windsor Castle, which has been a royal residence for over 900 years. The original settlement, Old Windsor, was actually a couple of miles away, but as the castle grew in importance, the newer settlement—New Windsor—flourished around it. By the Middle Ages, Windsor had become an important market town and royal borough. These days, it's part of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and has a population of around 33,000, not counting the huge number of visitors that pass through each year.

There's plenty to see and do. Windsor Castle is the obvious headline act, with its State Apartments, St George's Chapel and beautifully kept grounds. But there's more beyond the castle walls. Alexandra Gardens and the riverside walk offer a peaceful escape, while a wander through the pedestrianised streets will take you past all sorts of shops, galleries and restaurants. The Long Walk stretches all the way to the Copper Horse statue in Windsor Great Park—perfect for a proper stroll with a view. Across the bridge, you've got Eton with its historic college, charming architecture and quieter lanes. Just outside town, you'll find Runnymede—a key English Heritage site where the Magna Carta was signed—and the lovely National Trust-run Runnymede Meadows.

Wider Berkshire offers just as much variety. Ascot's well-known for the racecourse and the buzz it brings on race days, while Maidenhead gives you easy access to Cliveden, a grand National Trust estate with terraces, trails and river views. Reading's a short train ride for shopping and nightlife, and Newbury offers a more relaxed pace with the canal, countryside and Donnington Castle. You've also got Basildon Park and Greys Court just over the county border—both rich in history and set in gorgeous surroundings.

Windsor's easy to get to and well connected. There are two train stations—Windsor & Eton Central links to Slough for onward travel on the Elizabeth Line or GWR, while Windsor & Eton Riverside takes you straight into London Waterloo. The town's just off the M4, and close to both the M25 and M3, so it's well placed for road travel. Heathrow is only about 15 minutes away by car, which makes it a popular spot for international visitors and weekend getaways. You can even hop on a boat or enjoy a river cruise, which adds a different spin on arriving or exploring.

Berkshire as a county manages to be both understated and impressive at the same time. It's got those grand, showpiece towns like Windsor, but also a quiet countryside full of pubs, bridleways and hidden gems. The River Thames weaves through the landscape, bringing with it a trail of history and scenic spots. There's a strong sense of heritage here—castles, stately homes, horse racing—and yet it's also a place with growing towns, tech hubs, and a lot of green space in between. It's a county that feels both rooted in tradition and always moving forward.
