Pangbourne is a picture-perfect village tucked beside the River Thames in West Berkshire, and it's got that lovely mix of countryside calm and a bit of bustle that gives it real character. With its riverside setting, old-world charm and a decent high street full of independent shops, it's a firm favourite with walkers, boaters and those looking for a quieter pace without being too far from the action. The surrounding countryside is just as easy on the eye—rolling hills, woodland paths, and plenty of good spots for a lazy picnic or a pub lunch.
The history of Pangbourne goes right back to Saxon times, with the name itself believed to come from “Paega's people,” possibly a clan that settled here in the early days. By the time of the Domesday Book, it was a well-established little place. It was also once home to Kenneth Grahame, author of The Wind in the Willows, who drew inspiration from the river and woods nearby. Today, the population's just over 3,000, and it still feels like a proper village, despite its popularity. There's a bit of old money, a dash of bohemian, and plenty of pride in keeping the place looking its best.
The village has plenty to offer for a day out or a longer stay. There's Pangbourne Meadow for riverside walks and picnics, and nearby you'll find Beale Wildlife Park—a firm family favourite with animals, gardens and play areas. The village itself has a decent scattering of pubs, cafes and little independent shops, and if you're into heritage, Basildon Park is just across the water—a fine National Trust property with sweeping grounds and an elegant Georgian mansion. Greys Court isn't far either, and makes for a great day trip. The church in Pangbourne, St James the Less, is worth a visit too, with its links to local history and calm, peaceful setting.
Looking a bit wider across Berkshire, there's loads to do depending on what you fancy. Reading's only a short hop away and has shopping, museums and music venues, while Newbury offers everything from the famous racecourse to canalside pubs and independent galleries. Windsor Castle draws the crowds for good reason, and then there's the North Wessex Downs—full of walks, ancient landmarks and quiet villages where time seems to slow down. Berkshire really is a bit of a hidden gem when it comes to mixing rural beauty with things to do.
Getting to Pangbourne-on-Thames is surprisingly easy. The village has its own train station, with regular services to Reading and Oxford, and you can be in London Paddington in under an hour with a quick change. If you're coming by car, the A329 runs nearby and connects neatly to the M4. Heathrow is the nearest major airport, about 45 minutes away by road, and there are plenty of taxi services and local buses connecting Pangbourne to nearby villages and towns. It's well placed, but it doesn't feel overly busy or built up.
Berkshire as a county wears its history lightly but confidently. It's full of contrasts—market towns and motorways, ancient castles and tech hubs, riverside pubs and racing stables. It's got that royal connection with Windsor, but it doesn't shout about it. What makes it special is the way it all blends—there's always a bit of green, a bit of culture, and a sense that people here enjoy a good balance between town and country life.
