This gives Saltdean an old-fashioned seaside feel. Most of Saltdean's development took place during the 1920s and 1930s as developers built a fashionable holiday home suburb on the large expanse previously undeveloped land. The Saltdean Lido is one of the area's most well-known landmarks. The town boasts a population of approximately 12,000 today and is known for its relaxed atmosphere with many people being able to walk along the beach, drink coffee at a café and/or shop at local stores as common activities.
The primary road serving Saltdean is the A259, which connects Brighton, Newhaven and Eastbourne to one another; frequent bus service links to other areas of the area as well. The Undercliff Walk and Saltdean Beach are popular with walkers and cyclists, while Brighton has theatres, shops, and nightlife opportunities. Visitors to Saltdean can enjoy the National Trust properties of Devil’s Dyke and Birling Gap, while people visiting from the English heritage can visit the Lewes Castle and Newhaven Fort. Overall, Saltdean has a typical sea air, fish and chip dinner, and you can often be blown along the cliff-top as part of the everyday life of this area of Sussex.
