Winchelsea is located on a hilltop in Sussex in England and has a quaint medieval charm with its cobbled streets, and its old stone gateway, and is surrounded by beautiful rolling hills that lead out to the sea at the end of the Romney Marshes. The actual town was destroyed by storms in the 1300s, however the current town was built by King Edward I as a planned port and therefore has a traditional, historic layout with cellars below many of the buildings. There are only around 1,000 inhabitants of the town now, so Winchelsea feels very quiet and out of the way, with history present in all places.

The A259 connects Winchelsea to Rye and Hastings, and the local Windsor station provides rail services to Brighton, Ashford, and London. Many visitors look around St Thomas Church, the old gates and the medieval wine cellars. In the warmer months, many tourists will visit the nearby towns of Rye and Camber Sands, as well as those who are travelling to National Trust sites such as Lamb House or Bodiam Castle and those who are travelling to English Heritage sites such as Battle Abbey or Pevensey Castle. It has the feel of a great place to go to have a drink at the pub, breathe the sea air, and stroll down the crooked cobbled streets of the town.

We hope you found this Winchelsea tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
