East Sussex’s Burwash is a village at the top of a hill surrounded by beautiful countryside in the High Weald. It has a very historic feel due to its high street, pubs and inns that have been there since medieval times. The village is also known as the childhood home of the writer Rudyard Kipling. The area prospered during the ironworking and farming periods with lots of old cottages and timber-framed buildings still standing, giving Burwash a truly authentic feel of Sussex.
In terms of population, the village has a population of around two thousand five hundred, and the atmosphere in Burwash is laid back and lived in. Local shops, pubs and cafes are vital to the day-to-day life of Burwash residents. The A265 road runs through Burwash, and the local train stations at Etchingham and Stonegate provide regular services between London, Hastings and the South Coast.
Burwash’s biggest tourist attraction is Bateman's (Kipling's former home) which is open to visitors year-round; also popular with tourists are the nearby attractions of Bateman's and Bodiam Castle which are both owned by the National Trust, whilst visitors choosing English Heritage tend to visit Battle Abbey and Pevensey Castle. The area is characterised as one where antique shops, country walks and eating lunch at the pub seem to fit together seamlessly.
