Hartfield is an idyllic village located in East Sussex on the edge of Ashdown Forest and surrounded by rolling hills, woodlands, and typical Sussex countryside. The village has been around since medieval times and is most recognised as the birthplace of A. A. Milne, whose works include the famous Winnie-the-Pooh series, which were partly inspired by the village of Hartfield (specifically Pooh Bridge and the Hundred Acre Wood). Today, Hartfield has approximately 2,000 residents who live in a close-knit rural community where they can still enjoy their local pubs, cafés, and shopping experiences that form the hub of their community.
The village is connected by both the B2110 and A22 with East Grinstead, Uckfield, and Tunbridge Wells, while Cowden and Ashurst offer connections to London. There are many walkers, cyclists, families, and others that travel through Hartfield to reach Ashdown Forest and the surrounding countryside; however, there are also many gardens and historic houses that attract visitors to Hartfield throughout the year. Popular destinations for National Trust visitors in the area include Standen House and Sheffield Park, while English Heritage visitors often go to Bayham Old Abbey and Lewes Castle. Hartfield is a great place to visit for those who enjoy muddy boots, cream teas, and pubs in the countryside!
