East Sussex has one of its best villages, Alfriston, located in the Cuckmere Valley and surrounded by the beautiful rolling hills of the South Downs. The village has its roots in the middle ages and was a centre for many industries such as agriculture and trade. The buildings built from timber are still standing today providing much of the character of Alfriston. There are approximately 800 residents but many more visitors pass through Alfriston on weekends and during summer time.
The A27 and A259 roads provide very good access by car and railway from Berwick and Seaford provide services linking Brighton, Lewes and London. Walker will generally head to the South Downs Way, the Seven Sisters cliffs and the River Cuckmere, while the village has many tea rooms, pubs and independent shops. The National Trust has popular places nearby such as: Birling Gap and Clergy House. English Heritage has popular attractions such as Pevensey Castle and Lewes Castle. It's a very pleasant place where muddy boots go well with cream tea and an old stone pub.
