Buckfastleigh is located where the River Dart and southern Dartmoor meet, giving the town a pleasing combination of moorland scenery and the character of a Devon market town. With an extensive history, Buckfastleigh developed its economy through wool milling and farming, aided by the fact it was located on major trade routes. At present, the town has a population of approx. 3500, but despite its relatively small size, it has plenty of attractions and facilities. It is located on the main A38 trunk road, providing fast access to Exeter and Plymouth (and has train station services coming from both Totnes and Newton Abbot). Its primary attraction is Buckfast Abbey which is one of the top tourist attractions in Devon. One of the other attractions for visitors is the South Devon Railway which takes people on nostalgic steam train rides through the Dart Valley.
Families often visit the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary while walkers have easy access to the wide-open spaces of Dartmoor National Park. The National Trust has properties nearby including Bradley Manor and Castle Drogo, and English Heritage has interest from people visiting the prehistoric remains found throughout Dartmoor. With the river, independent shops, and beautiful countryside nearby; there are always new places to explore.
