Great Torrington is situated approximately 400 feet above sea-level on a hill overlooking the River Torridge in North Devon. As an established market town for many centuries, Great Torrington still retains that feel today, with many of its residents knowing each other. There is also a significant amount of history dating back to the English Civil War, as the Battle of Torrington occurred here during 1646, and this history can still be seen in parts of the commons and ll the town's historical areas. The estimated population is approximately 6,000 people, and the town is still able to maintain a degree of independence, due to its abundance of independent shops, cafes and local businesses (versus a saturation of national chain stores).
There are very good road connections via the A386 with Bideford and Okehampton, and Barnstaple and Exeter are also but a short distance away without too much travelling inconvenience. In addition to Dartington Crystal being one of the towns most recognised tourist attractions, the Tarka Trail attracts walkers and cyclists throughout the calendar year. RHS Garden Rosemoor is located on the western outskirts of the town and attracts both day visitors and garden patrons. Other popular attractions nearby include National Trust properties such as Arlington Court and the Hartland area of coastline, in addition to the English Heritage properties of Okehampton castle and other historical fortifications in the north Devon. Beaches at Westward Ho! and Instow are not too far away for a quick trip to enjoy the sea when the weather permits.
