The town of Ashburton is located at the southern end of Dartmoor National Park, offering a unique blend of historical charm and an independent spirit. As one of the last important stannary towns associated with the tin trade, Ashburton flourished through wool and agriculture, which has resulted in a large number of Georgian and medieval buildings still present today throughout the town centre. Ashburton has a population of about 4,500 people, providing a good range of local facilities while still maintaining a friendly 'small-town' feel.
The A38 main road runs a short distance from the edge of town, providing excellent access to Exeter, Plymouth and the South Devon coastline, and the nearest mainline rail connections can be found at Newton Abbot. Ashburton is famous for its antique shops, cafes and thriving arts scene, and Ashburton is a popular base for exploring Dartmoor's tors, rivers and walking trails. The National Trust has a number of attractions in the area including Castle Drogo and Bradley Manor while many visitors to English Heritage are visiting the historic area of Buckfast Abbey and the many prehistoric sites found on the moors. Buckfastleigh and Widecombe-in-the-Moor are both nearby, as well as the River Dart valley which have many things to see and do.
