Located at the north edge of Dartmoor and possessing a rustic West Country ambiance made up of outdoor merchandise shops, ancient taverns, and walkers with muddy boots are a perfect example of this community lifestyle. This community is "home" to approximately 8,500 people since their founding in Saxon times when they were once a major trading centre for wool (sheep) products and agriculture. In addition, Okehampton Castle was once an important centre for wool production and today is one of the best English Heritage sites in Devon.

There has been a steady increase in population due to excellent transportation access via the A30 (providing direct access to Exeter or Cornwall). As a result of the reintroduction of rail travel back into Exeter, it is much easier to commute than before. The town is also a destination for people who want to hike/bike with their families without any hassle because of Simmons Park, Granite Way, and the tors (on Dartmoor). There are also a number of National Trust properties close by, such as Castle Drogo (Drewsteignton) and Finch Foundry (Sticklepath), both packed with character and history. The scenic and natural beauty of Dartmoor is right on your doorstep; places like Meldon Reservoir, Lydford Gorge, and Roadford Lake should all be considered a great day out.

We hope you found this Okehampton tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
