Birstall is a large village and civil parish that is located in the Charnwood borough of Leicestershire. In reality, Birstall feels more like a small town these days, with around 13,000 residents and the northern suburbs of Leicester city almost meeting its southern edge. Its older core developed beside the River Soar, centred around the medieval St James the Great Church, before modern housing expanded rapidly during the twentieth century. Getting about is fairly painless for both locals and visitors, since the A6 runs alongside the village, the A46 and M1 motorway are close by, and regular buses head into Leicester and Loughborough. Watermead Country Park provides lakes, paths, fresh air, and open space nearby, whilst the village itself has lots of shops, schools, pubs and healthcare. The National Trust-owned Stoneywell isn't too far away, nor is English Heritage's Kirby Muxloe Castle, if you fancy a day out.
