Markfield is a fairly large village that is located on the edge of Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire. Markfield has about 6,000 residents and a history that goes back to the Domesday Book (1086). Farming and quarrying have shaped much of its past development, and the surrounding rocky landscape still gives the area its distinctive character. The A50 runs close by, while Junction 22 of the M1 is practically on the doorstep, making Leicester, Coalville and Loughborough easy to reach. Shops, pubs, schools, healthcare and sports facilities cover the everyday needs of locals, with Hill Hole Nature Reserve providing a handy local escape. Bradgate Park is nearby, while National Trust-owned Stoneywell and English Heritage's Ashby de la Zouch Castle both make good days out.
