Grantchester is a small, picturesque village that is located right beside the River Cam, about two miles south of Cambridge, and with a population of around 600 people. Recorded in the Domesday Book, it later became famous for its connection with the poet Rupert Brooke and the circle of Cambridge writers and thinkers who gathered here. The Orchard Tea Garden, old cottages, riverside meadows and St Andrew and St Mary Church give the place oddles of character. Cambridge is easily reached by road, bus, bike or on foot across Grantchester Meadows. National Trust days out that you could take in the area include Wimpole Estate and Anglesey Abbey, while English Heritage's Denny Abbey is also within driving distance if you fancy a trip there.
