Cottenham is a lively and well-sized village just north of Cambridge, sitting comfortably between the open Fen landscape and the buzz of the city. It's the sort of place where you'll find a high street with proper character, a good sense of community, and all the basics you'd expect, along with a few pleasant surprises. It's got that ideal mix of countryside calm and city convenience, making it popular with commuters and families alike.
The village has been around a long time—there's evidence of Roman activity in the area, and it's listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. Like many Fen-edge villages, Cottenham grew around farming, with land reclaimed over the centuries to make it more productive. A big fire in 1850 destroyed much of the high street, so a lot of the current buildings date from the Victorian era, though older cottages and barns still pop up here and there. The population now sits at around 7,000, and while the village has expanded in recent years, it's kept its distinctive character and strong local feel.
In terms of things to do, Cottenham's got plenty for a village its size. There's a leisure centre, a community college, primary schools, local pubs, takeaways, and a handful of independent shops and services. The All Saints' Church is a beautiful spot, with a tall spire that dominates the skyline and dates back in parts to the 14th century. The village green and rec offer space to walk or watch a bit of football, and there are regular local events from beer festivals to seasonal fairs. Just down the road, Wicken Fen is one of the National Trust's best-loved reserves, and Anglesey Abbey is within easy reach too, with its historic house and well-kept gardens.
Wider Cambridgeshire has no shortage of places to explore. You've got Cambridge just ten minutes away by car or bus, with its historic colleges, world-class museums, cafés, bookshops and galleries. Ely's cathedral is always a showstopper, and its riverside setting makes for a great day out. The Imperial War Museum at Duxford is brilliant for anyone with an interest in aviation, and Wimpole Estate gives you open fields, formal gardens and a working farm all in one. From nature trails and cycle routes to village pubs and ancient abbeys, it's all within easy reach.
Getting to and from Cottenham is simple enough. It's just off the B1049, which runs into Cambridge in one direction and up towards Wilburton in the other. Cambridge North is the nearest railway station, around 15 minutes away by car or bike, with fast links into London, Ely and Norwich. Local buses run regularly into the city and surrounding villages, and the area is very popular with cyclists, thanks to its flat roads and good cycle paths. For air travel, Stansted Airport is just under an hour away by road, and Cambridge Airport handles smaller regional flights.
Cambridgeshire has a unique rhythm to it. It blends history, innovation and peaceful countryside in a way that never feels forced. From the grand colleges of Cambridge to the quiet beauty of the fens, the county has space to breathe. It's a place where you can walk ancient tracks, catch live theatre, find a hidden nature reserve or grab a pint in a thatched pub—all in the same afternoon. For those who like a bit of depth to where they live or visit, Cambridgeshire always delivers.
