Yaxley is a large and lively village on the southern edge of Peterborough, right on the border between Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. It's the sort of place where you'll find rows of cottages alongside newer estates, a strong local community and plenty of green space just a short stroll away. While officially a village, it's grown over the years to feel more like a small town in its own right, with a solid range of local services and that classic village charm still intact.

The history of Yaxley goes back a fair way, with the village mentioned in the Domesday Book and its name thought to come from the Old English for “cuckoo clearing.” In the past, it was an agricultural settlement surrounded by flat fenland, and it stayed relatively quiet until Peterborough's expansion nudged closer. Today, Yaxley is home to over 9,000 people and continues to grow, but it's still held together by its historic church, traditional pubs and well-established community groups. St Peter's Church, with its striking spire, is a familiar landmark, and the old High Street still gives you a feel for how the village once was.

Around the village you've got everything you'd expect—convenience stores, cafés, takeaways, barbers, pubs and plenty of green spaces for walking or dog-walking. Yaxley has its own football and cricket clubs, a well-used community centre and a good number of schools and nurseries. Just up the road in Peterborough, you'll find the impressive Peterborough Cathedral, and not far beyond that is Elton Hall—still lived in but open to visitors. For National Trust days out, Ferry Meadows is ideal for families, with lakes, walking trails and picnic spots. English Heritage's Longthorpe Tower is also nearby, with its rare medieval wall paintings tucked away in a quiet corner of the city.

Across Cambridgeshire, there's plenty to get stuck into. You've got Ely's towering cathedral and riverside charm, the world-famous university town of Cambridge with its colleges, punting and cobbled streets, and Duxford's enormous Imperial War Museum packed with historic aircraft. Anglesey Abbey mixes country house elegance with beautiful gardens, while Wicken Fen offers one of the country's best places to spot birds and other wildlife. There's a lot of variety, whether you're after history, nature or just a proper village pub after a long walk.

Yaxley's well connected considering its village feel. You're only a few minutes from the A1(M), making it easy to get up and down the country by car. Peterborough Station is less than 15 minutes away and offers fast trains to London, Leeds, York and Edinburgh, so it's a good spot for commuters or regular travellers. Local bus services run between the village and Peterborough regularly, and for flights, you've got both Stansted and East Midlands within easy reach by car—around an hour each way depending on traffic.

Cambridgeshire as a whole is a county full of contrasts—flat fenland stretching for miles, historic towns and villages, and vibrant, modern hubs like Cambridge and Peterborough. It's got a rich agricultural past, a strong academic present, and no shortage of peaceful countryside between the busier towns. Whether you're into riverside walks, grand houses, quirky market towns or hidden nature reserves, the county offers it all in a way that feels accessible and unpretentious.
