Chatteris is a quiet, friendly market town sitting right in the heart of the Cambridgeshire Fens. Surrounded by wide-open farmland and big skies, it's a place where life ticks along at its own pace, with a strong sense of community and a decent mix of shops, schools and local events. While not the biggest or flashiest town in the county, it's the sort of place people settle in and stay put—a good blend of rural charm and everyday practicality.
The town's roots stretch back over a thousand years, with early mentions of a religious settlement and evidence of Roman activity in the surrounding landscape. The name is thought to come from “Ceatta's Island,” once surrounded by marshland before the fens were drained. Like many towns in the area, Chatteris grew slowly as the land was reclaimed for farming, and it became a centre for agricultural trade. It has held onto its market town character ever since. The population sits at just over 11,000 these days, and although it's grown in recent decades, the town still feels compact and connected.
In Chatteris itself, you've got a range of small shops, takeaways, pubs and a handful of cafés lining the high street, along with a lovely parish church and a handful of green spaces dotted around town. The museum is worth a stop, with exhibits on local life and the changing Fenland landscape. The town hosts an annual Midsummer Festival, complete with parades, stalls and family fun. Nearby, you've got National Trust favourites like Wicken Fen, which offers boardwalk trails and wildlife spotting, and Peckover House in Wisbech, with its walled gardens and Georgian charm. For something a bit different, the Stretham Old Engine just outside Ely gives a glimpse into how the fens were originally drained.
Across Cambridgeshire, there's plenty more to dig into. Cambridge is the obvious draw, with punting, museums, beautiful old colleges and top-notch food and drink. Ely makes a lovely day out with its imposing cathedral and riverside walks, while St Ives has a proper market town feel and sits neatly by the River Great Ouse. The Imperial War Museum at Duxford is packed with historic aircraft, and Anglesey Abbey's gardens and woodland walks are a local favourite. Nature lovers have RSPB reserves dotted across the fens, and cyclists can make the most of the flat terrain.
Chatteris doesn't have a railway station of its own, but nearby March and Ely are both within easy reach by road, offering links to Cambridge, Peterborough and London. The A141 skirts the edge of town, connecting to Huntingdon and the A1, or east towards Wisbech and the Norfolk border. Buses run regularly through to March, Cambridge and St Ives. If you're heading further afield, Stansted Airport is just over an hour's drive away, making it the most convenient for international travel. Locally, everything's within walking or cycling distance, and the roads are generally easygoing.
Cambridgeshire is one of those counties that's got a bit of everything. It's best known for the university city, but beyond Cambridge you'll find big skies, winding rivers, patchwork farmland and some of the best walking and cycling routes in eastern England. From ancient abbeys and quiet churches to steam trains and nature reserves, there's something for everyone. It's the kind of place where the old and new blend naturally—where you're never far from a footpath, a decent coffee, or a bit of local history tucked into a village hall.
