Burntwood sits quietly in the south of Staffordshire, not far from Lichfield, blending suburban life with plenty of greenery. It's one of those places that feels like you're never too far from open countryside but still has all the essentials right on your doorstep. With its parks, nature reserves, friendly pubs, and steady pace of life, Burntwood has become a popular spot for families and commuters looking for that bit of space without losing the town conveniences.
Burntwood's history is rooted in its industrial and mining past. Originally a collection of small villages, the area grew rapidly during the 19th century with the rise of coal mining, ironworks and brickmaking. As the industries thrived, so did the population, with rows of miners' cottages springing up. After the decline of mining in the 20th century, Burntwood transformed into a residential town, expanding alongside neighbouring Lichfield and Cannock. These days, it's home to around 27,000 people, offering a comfortable balance of housing, schools, local shops and green open spaces.
There's plenty to enjoy in and around Burntwood itself. Chasewater Country Park sits right on the town's edge, offering a huge expanse of water, woodland, and open grassland, great for walks, cycling, birdwatching or just a relaxed afternoon by the reservoir. The park also has a heritage steam railway, sailing clubs, and even a café for when you need a sit-down and a cuppa. Within the town, you've got shopping centres like Sankey's Corner, along with local pubs, takeaways and cafés. Not far away, National Trust's Shugborough Estate near Stafford offers stately home grandeur, while English Heritage's Stafford Castle and Tamworth Castle provide excellent trips into the region's past.
If you're happy to venture further across Staffordshire, you'll find a real variety. Alton Towers is about an hour away for thrill-seekers, while Cannock Chase offers miles of peaceful woodland trails, perfect for cycling, hiking and spotting wildlife. Trentham Gardens near Stoke-on-Trent combines beautiful gardens, shopping village and Monkey Forest. Lichfield, just down the road, offers the stunning three-spired cathedral, museums and plenty of independent shops. Over at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, you'll find peaceful remembrance gardens set in beautiful parkland.
Burntwood's location makes it nice and accessible. It sits close to both the A5 and M6 Toll, offering quick routes to Birmingham, Stafford, and further afield. Lichfield Trent Valley and Lichfield City railway stations are just a short drive away, offering direct trains into Birmingham, London and the North West. Birmingham Airport is around 30 minutes away by car, and there's a reliable local bus network connecting Burntwood to surrounding towns and villages.
Staffordshire always manages to offer that perfect mix – proper countryside, friendly towns, and no shortage of things to do. Whether you're after heritage, outdoor adventure, family attractions or just somewhere peaceful to call home, Staffordshire quietly gets on with providing it all.
