Stoke-on-Trent sits right in the heart of Staffordshire, proudly calling itself the world capital of ceramics. It's a city that wears its industrial past on its sleeve, with old bottle kilns, pottery museums and factory shops still scattered across its six distinct towns. While it's very much shaped by its pottery heritage, modern Stoke has plenty more going on, from green spaces and shopping to theatres, football and growing cultural attractions, all wrapped up with that warm, down-to-earth Potteries charm.

The city's story really kicked off during the Industrial Revolution, though settlements in the area go back much further. The six towns of Burslem, Tunstall, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton gradually merged into what we now know as Stoke-on-Trent. The abundance of clay, coal and salt made it perfect for pottery production, and by the 18th and 19th centuries, the likes of Wedgwood, Spode, Minton and Royal Doulton were producing fine ceramics that ended up on tables and in cabinets around the world. Even today, you'll still hear locals refer to it as "The Potteries." Stoke-on-Trent officially became a city in 1925 and now has a population of around 260,000, making it Staffordshire's biggest urban area.

There's plenty to do across the city itself. The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery is a real highlight, home to part of the Staffordshire Hoard and a fascinating collection of ceramics. The Gladstone Pottery Museum offers a glimpse into working conditions of the old factories, while World of Wedgwood gives a more polished, modern take on the industry, with factory tours, shops and even a chance to throw your own pot. Hanley, as the main commercial centre, is where you'll find big-name shops, theatres, bars and restaurants, while Trentham Gardens offers beautiful walks, a shopping village and the popular Monkey Forest. National Trust's Biddulph Grange Garden sits just north of the city, with its quirky themed gardens, and English Heritage's Stafford Castle isn't too far either.

Wider Staffordshire offers even more. Alton Towers, one of the UK's top theme parks, is just down the road, packed with rollercoasters and family attractions. Cannock Chase AONB provides wonderful walking and cycling trails, while Shugborough Hall combines grand architecture, parkland and working farms. Lichfield's stunning three-spired cathedral is well worth a visit, and the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas offers a peaceful, reflective experience. For nature lovers, The Roaches and the southern edge of the Peak District deliver stunning scenery right on the county's doorstep.

Stoke-on-Trent is easy to get to. The M6 motorway runs just to the west of the city, offering good links north and south, while the A50 takes you east towards Derby and the East Midlands. Stoke railway station sits on the West Coast Main Line, providing regular fast services to London, Manchester, Birmingham and beyond. For air travel, Manchester Airport is just under an hour's drive, while Birmingham Airport is also convenient. Local buses and the city's compact layout make it simple to get around once you're here.

Staffordshire itself has a bit of everything — rich industrial history, rolling countryside, market towns, grand houses, canals and friendly, grounded people. Whether you're exploring its industrial heritage, walking its hills or tucking into oatcakes at a local café, there's a genuine warmth to the place that keeps people coming back.
