Cannock sits on the southern edge of Staffordshire, with the sprawling greenery of Cannock Chase right on its doorstep. It's a town that's quietly grown from its industrial roots into a busy hub for commuters, shoppers and visitors who want easy access to both countryside and city life. While you've still got traces of its mining past, Cannock today is full of shops, cafés, parks, and local businesses, with plenty going on to keep people busy.

The town's history goes way back to medieval times, but it was the discovery of coal in the 19th century that really transformed Cannock. As the mining industry took off, the town expanded rapidly, becoming part of the wider Cannock Chase coalfield. For decades, mining dominated life here, but when the pits closed in the late 20th century, Cannock shifted focus and developed into the retail and residential centre it is today. These days, it's home to around 30,000 people, with the wider district including nearby villages bringing the population up to over 100,000.

There's plenty to see and do around Cannock itself. Cannock Chase, right on the town's edge, is a huge draw for walkers, cyclists, and families, with miles of trails, scenic views, and wildlife. Birches Valley Forest Centre is a great starting point, and you'll often find people heading out for picnics or a bit of Go Ape tree-top fun. In town, the shopping centres offer plenty of big names alongside independents, and there's a good choice of pubs, restaurants and cafés. A little further afield, National Trust's Shugborough Estate offers a brilliant day out with its stately home, farm, gardens and parkland, while English Heritage's Stafford Castle sits just up the road with lovely views across the county.

We hope you found this Cannock tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
