Stone is one of those lovely Staffordshire market towns that manages to feel both busy and relaxed at the same time. Sat on the banks of the Trent and alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal, it's got a mix of old-world charm, a thriving food and drink scene, and plenty of green space around the edges. The town has built up a bit of a reputation as a foodie hub, with regular farmers' markets, festivals and some brilliant independent eateries, all adding to its laid-back atmosphere.
Stone's history runs back to Saxon times, and like many places in Staffordshire, it really came into its own with the arrival of the canals in the 18th century. The Trent and Mersey Canal turned Stone into a key stopping point for trade and industry, particularly brewing. In fact, Stone was once known as something of a brewing centre, with several well-known breweries calling the town home. Today, it's more about craft beer and independent businesses, but you can still see reminders of that industrial past dotted about. The town's population sits at around 17,000 these days, and while it's grown, it's managed to hang onto that proper market town feel.
There's plenty to keep you busy in and around Stone. The High Street is full of independent shops, cafés, and pubs, and there's a real community vibe with events like the Stone Food & Drink Festival pulling in visitors from miles around. You've got the canal right through town, great for waterside walks or a gentle afternoon watching the narrowboats potter past. Not far from Stone is the National Trust's Shugborough Estate, with its grand house, gardens and parkland. A bit further afield you've got Boscobel House, linked to Charles II's escape, and English Heritage's Stafford Castle just up the road offers sweeping views and a dose of medieval history.
The wider Staffordshire area opens up plenty more. Alton Towers is less than an hour away, perfect for a day out with the family. Trentham Gardens near Stoke gives you beautiful gardens, lakeside walks, Monkey Forest, and a decent bit of shopping too. If you fancy getting outdoors, Cannock Chase has miles of trails for walking and cycling, and over in Lichfield, the cathedral stands tall with its unique three spires. Then of course there's The Potteries themselves for anyone after a bit of local ceramic heritage.
Stone's well connected, which makes it a good base for both locals and visitors. The town has its own railway station with direct services to Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent, and further afield to Crewe and London. The A34 runs straight through town, connecting easily to the M6 for trips north or south. Birmingham Airport is about 45 minutes away by car, and Manchester Airport isn't much further if you need it. Buses cover local routes and connect Stone to nearby towns like Stafford, Stoke and Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Staffordshire as a whole has a bit of everything. You've got industry and history sitting alongside beautiful countryside, welcoming towns and villages, and enough variety to keep life interesting. From The Potteries and Cannock Chase to market towns like Stone and Lichfield's cathedral city, the county doesn't try to shout too loudly — but it's full of little gems waiting to be found.
