Uttoxeter sits quietly in the heart of Staffordshire, a market town that blends old charm with a bit of modern life. Known for its racecourse and surrounded by lush countryside, it's the sort of place where you get the best of both worlds – plenty going on, yet never too far from a peaceful spot to catch your breath.
The town's history runs deep. Uttoxeter has been around since Saxon times, its name thought to have roots in Old English. Through the centuries, it grew as a market centre, with agriculture and industry playing their parts. There's even a famous tale of Samuel Johnson standing bareheaded in the market square as penance for a youthful argument with his father. The population nowadays sits at around 14,000, give or take, giving it that small-town feel where plenty of people still know each other by name.
There's a decent mix of things to do in and around town. The Uttoxeter Racecourse brings in plenty of visitors, offering a lively calendar of events. The market still runs, carrying on the town's trading tradition. For a bit of greenery, Bramshall Road Park and the nearby countryside offer good walking spots. A short drive takes you to Sudbury Hall and the Museum of Childhood, looked after by the National Trust, with its grand interiors and fascinating exhibits. Not too far away, the English Heritage site of Tutbury Castle gives a glimpse into medieval life, along with cracking views over the Dove Valley. If you're into a bit more nature, the Peak District isn't that far away, with its endless trails and beauty spots.
Widening the net across Staffordshire, you'll find plenty more to explore. Alton Towers, one of the country's top theme parks, sits just a short drive from town, drawing thrill-seekers in droves. The Potteries in Stoke-on-Trent still celebrate Staffordshire's world-famous ceramics industry, with museums, factory shops, and studios. Cannock Chase offers miles of woodlands, walking and cycling trails, and even Go Ape for the adventurous. Then there's Shugborough Estate with its stately home, gardens, and farm – another National Trust gem.
Getting to Uttoxeter's pretty straightforward. The A50 dual carriageway cuts right by the town, linking it to Stoke and Derby, while the A518 and A522 connect nearby towns and villages. The train station sits on the Crewe to Derby line, with regular services making it handy for commuters and visitors alike. For flights, East Midlands Airport is about 30 minutes away, offering plenty of domestic and European routes. Birmingham Airport's a bit further but still easy enough to reach.
Staffordshire itself has a bit of everything packed into its borders. Rolling countryside, bustling towns, old industrial hubs, and plenty of history at every turn. It's the sort of county where you can spend one day wandering round a stately home, the next hiking through hills or exploring canal towpaths, and the day after that touring potteries or riding rollercoasters.
