Hanley sits right at the heart of Stoke-on-Trent, often thought of as the city centre for The Potteries. It's the busiest of the six towns that make up Stoke, buzzing with shops, entertainment, and culture, while still carrying that proper Staffordshire character. Walk around the place and you'll see the old mixed with the new – reminders of its industrial past sitting alongside modern shopping centres, restaurants, and a lively nightlife scene.
Hanley's history is tied closely to the rise of the pottery industry. During the 18th and 19th centuries, this part of Staffordshire became famous worldwide for its ceramics, thanks to the combination of local clay, coal, and skilled labour. Big pottery names like Wedgwood, Spode and Minton were all part of the wider Potteries area, with Hanley at the commercial centre. Over time, Hanley developed as the retail and administrative heart of the city, while the pot banks churned out fine china and earthenware. Today, Hanley has a population of around 20,000 people (including Shelton).
There's plenty to see and do in and around Hanley. The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery is a real highlight, housing not only an impressive ceramics collection but also the famous Staffordshire Hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold. The Regent Theatre brings in big touring shows, musicals and comedians, while Victoria Hall hosts concerts and events. The intu Potteries Shopping Centre offers plenty of big-name stores alongside smaller independents, and Hanley Park, recently restored, gives you green space right in town. Not far away, you'll find the National Trust's Biddulph Grange Garden, a fascinating Victorian garden, and English Heritage's Mow Cop Castle up on the Staffordshire-Cheshire border with cracking views.
Looking further afield in Staffordshire, the options open up even more. Alton Towers is about 40 minutes away for those after some adrenaline, while Cannock Chase offers peaceful woodlands, cycling trails and wildlife spotting.
