Lichfield might be one of England's smaller cities, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in charm, character, and history. Sitting in the heart of Staffordshire, it's best known for its stunning cathedral, lovely parks, independent shops, and lively café culture. It's one of those places where you can stroll around at a relaxed pace, take in the architecture, stop for a coffee, and feel like you've stepped into a peaceful corner of the world that hasn't lost touch with its roots.
The history of Lichfield goes back to Saxon times, becoming an important religious centre by the 7th century when St Chad set up his bishopric here. Over time, the city grew around its cathedral, which remains its defining feature with its rare and beautiful three spires, often called "The Ladies of the Vale." The medieval period saw Lichfield grow as a centre for pilgrimage, trade and learning. It later became famous as the birthplace of Dr Samuel Johnson, who compiled the first authoritative dictionary of the English language. Today, Lichfield has a population of around 35,000 and still retains its historical feel while comfortably blending in modern living.
In and around the city, there's plenty to explore. Lichfield Cathedral dominates the skyline and is free to visit, with its stunning stained glass, medieval carvings and peaceful gardens. The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum celebrates the life of Lichfield's most famous son, while Erasmus Darwin House offers a glimpse into the life of Charles Darwin's grandfather. Beacon Park, right in the city centre, is perfect for a stroll, picnic, or a game of tennis. A short drive brings you to National Trust's Shugborough Estate, with its grand house, gardens and working farm, while English Heritage's Stafford Castle isn't far away either.
