Burton-upon-Trent sits on the River Trent in east Staffordshire, a town long synonymous with one thing — brewing. While plenty of towns have their specialities, Burton pretty much wrote the book when it comes to beer, and that proud heritage still shapes the place today. But there's much more to Burton than just hops and barley, with its riverside walks, shopping, parks and strong community feel all making it a great spot to visit or call home.

The town's history stretches back over a thousand years, but it was the rise of brewing in the 18th and 19th centuries that really put Burton on the map. Its unique water — rich in minerals like gypsum — made it perfect for brewing pale ales, and soon the likes of Bass, Marston's and Worthington were shipping beer all over the world. The arrival of the canals and railways only boosted Burton's reach even further. Though the number of breweries has declined, brewing remains a big part of town life. Today, Burton has a population of around 76,000 and continues to thrive as a modern town with deep historic roots.

There's plenty to do right in Burton itself. The National Brewery Centre tells the story of the town's world-famous brewing heritage, with historic vehicles, brewing equipment, and, of course, plenty of beer tasting. St Modwen's Church sits in the town centre, and Burton Market Hall still operates as a focal point for local trade. The Washlands, running alongside the River Trent, offer peaceful walking trails with lovely views and plenty of wildlife. A little further out, National Trust's Calke Abbey, with its beautifully preserved ‘unstately home' feel, offers an atmospheric day out, while English Heritage's Tutbury Castle lies just to the north, rich in history and with great views over the countryside.

If you're venturing further across Staffordshire, you'll find plenty more. Alton Towers sits less than an hour away, offering rollercoasters and rides for all ages. Cannock Chase brings open countryside for walking, cycling and spotting deer. Shugborough Hall, Weston Park and the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas provide stunning grounds and moving stories of British history. Over in Stoke-on-Trent, the pottery museums and World of Wedgwood are well worth a trip, and Lichfield Cathedral's magnificent spires are only a short drive away.

Burton's well connected. The A38 runs right past the town, linking easily to Derby, Lichfield and Birmingham, while the A50 takes you across to Stoke-on-Trent and the M1. Burton railway station offers regular services to Birmingham, Nottingham and Derby, with easy connections on to London. Birmingham Airport is the closest major airport, about 30 miles away, while East Midlands Airport sits roughly the same distance to the east. Local buses serve the town well, and most of the town centre is easily walkable.

Staffordshire as a whole quietly gets on with offering some of England's best variety. Industry, countryside, castles, family attractions — it's all here, mixed in with proper down-to-earth people who are always happy to point you towards a good pub or a hidden beauty spot. Whether you're visiting for a day or settling down for longer, Staffordshire's got that easy-going charm that draws people in.
