Tamworth sits in the south-eastern corner of Staffordshire, where the River Tame meets the River Anker, and manages to blend rich history with modern living. It's known for its grand Norman castle, strong Saxon roots, thriving shopping scene, and family-friendly attractions, all wrapped up in that typical Staffordshire mix of laid-back charm and proper local pride. Though it's grown and modernised over the years, you still get a real sense of its past as you walk around town.
The town's history stretches way back to Saxon times, when Tamworth was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Mercia. Its strategic position made it an important centre long before the Normans arrived and built the famous Tamworth Castle, which still dominates the skyline today. Over the centuries, the town grew as a market centre, and by the time the Industrial Revolution arrived, Tamworth had strong links to mining, textiles and canal transport. Today, Tamworth's population sits at around 79,000, and while the industry has largely faded, the town continues to thrive as a commuter base and regional shopping hub, with plenty to offer visitors and locals alike.
Right in the heart of Tamworth sits the castle itself — a beautifully preserved Norman motte-and-bailey structure that's open to visitors, with hands-on exhibits and lovely grounds. Just nearby, you'll find the castle grounds, a peaceful riverside park with gardens, a playground, and mini golf. The SnowDome is one of Tamworth's biggest modern draws, offering year-round indoor skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating. A short drive away, National Trust's Middleton Hall offers gorgeous gardens and interesting exhibitions, while English Heritage's Lichfield Cathedral, with its impressive three spires, lies just down the road. The surrounding area also includes lovely stretches of the Coventry Canal and plenty of countryside walks.
Wider Staffordshire offers even more for visitors. Alton Towers is just over an hour away, packed with rollercoasters and family rides. Trentham Gardens, Monkey Forest and the World of Wedgwood sit up near Stoke-on-Trent. Cannock Chase offers excellent walking, cycling and wildlife-watching, while Shugborough Hall, Weston Park, and the National Memorial Arboretum give you that classic country house experience. The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stafford Castle and Chasewater Country Park are all within easy reach for those wanting a good day out without travelling too far.
Tamworth's well connected, making it an easy place to get to. The A5 runs right by the town, linking directly to the M42, A38 and M6 Toll, so Birmingham, Coventry, Lichfield and Leicester are all close at hand. Tamworth railway station sits on the West Coast Main Line and the CrossCountry route, offering regular services to Birmingham, London, Derby, Nottingham and beyond. Birmingham Airport is just half an hour's drive away, making domestic and international flights easy to reach. Local buses serve Tamworth and the nearby villages, and the town centre is easy to explore on foot.
Staffordshire as a county quietly offers some of England's best variety. You've got industrial heritage in Stoke, the green spaces of Cannock Chase, market towns like Stafford and Lichfield, and family favourites like Alton Towers. The people are friendly, the scenery's lovely, and whether you want history, countryside, or a day out with the kids, there's always something to discover.
