Stafford sits right in the middle of Staffordshire, quietly going about its business as the county town. It's got that perfect mix of history, green spaces and modern convenience, with its castle ruins keeping watch over a town centre that still bustles with markets, shops, and cafés. You've got the River Sow weaving through the middle, leafy parks, and a real sense of local pride. It's not a place that tries too hard, but that's part of its charm.
The town's history goes back well over a thousand years. It's thought to have been founded by Æthelflæd, daughter of King Alfred, in the 10th century as part of a network of fortified burhs to defend against Viking raids. Stafford Castle was first built by the Normans and still stands today, overlooking the town. Over time, Stafford grew as a market town, then developed light industry and shoe manufacturing. These days, the town is more focused on retail, public services, and education, with a population of around 72,000. It's still very much the administrative and civic heart of the county.
There's plenty to keep visitors busy in Stafford itself. The remains of Stafford Castle make for a great walk with lovely views across the surrounding countryside. In town, you'll find the Ancient High House, one of the largest timber-framed townhouses in England, now a museum filled with local history. The town centre mixes well-known high street names with independent shops, while Victoria Park offers a peaceful riverside space right in the centre. Nearby, the National Trust's Shugborough Estate offers stately grandeur, sprawling parkland, and fascinating history, while English Heritage's Stafford Castle is always worth a return visit.
Wider Staffordshire offers a real variety of days out. Alton Towers is not far for rollercoaster fans, while Cannock Chase AONB is right on the doorstep with miles of walking, cycling and wildlife-spotting routes. The Potteries museums and factory shops in Stoke-on-Trent are within easy reach, as is Trentham Gardens with its shopping village, Monkey Forest and Italian gardens. Lichfield brings its stunning cathedral and market town feel, while the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas offers something more reflective and moving.
Stafford's easy to get to thanks to its central location. The M6 motorway runs just west of town, offering quick access to Birmingham, Manchester, and the North West. Stafford railway station sits on the West Coast Main Line, with fast trains to London, Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester. Birmingham Airport is just under an hour away by car, and Manchester Airport isn't much further. Local buses serve Stafford and the surrounding villages, and the compact town centre is easily walkable.
Staffordshire as a whole offers that perfect balance — proper countryside, rich history, a bit of industry, a bit of glamour, and always plenty of down-to-earth friendliness. From castles to theme parks, stately homes to woodland walks, there's never any shortage of things to see or do, and you always feel welcome wherever you go.
