One of Kent's most stunning villages, Chiddingstone epitomizes the idyllic rural life typical of this part of England. Its exquisite timber-frame houses dot narrow lanes leading into a traditional village square that feels out of time with its history. Today, because much of the village is owned and managed by the National Trust, Chiddingstone retains its unique character, despite modern development being quite limited. The history of Chiddingstone dates back hundreds of years; originally, it developed around farming, the church and Chiddingstone Castle, which now provides visitors with much to see in terms of collections and gardens. The population here is quite small, numbering less than 1,000; however, with so much history and charm Chiddingstone punches well above its weight.
There are rail stations at Penshurst and Hildenborough that serve central London; in addition, the roads through the Weald provide easy access to Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells. There are many options for walkers, cyclists and history enthusiasts in this area; there are many walkways winding around the valley. There are also National Trust sites nearby, including Chartwell, Emmetts Garden and Knole, as well as other sites of interest to those who love history, such as Bayham Old Abbey and Lullingstone Roman Villa, which are both within a short distance to visit for a day. For those looking for a bit more to do, Penshurst Place, Hever Castle and the vineyards of western Kent add even more to this area.
We hope you found this Chiddingstone tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
