Tunbridge Wells is one of those towns that strikes a lovely balance between elegant charm and everyday convenience. Tucked into the rolling Kent countryside, it's known for its spa heritage, Georgian architecture and independent spirit. There's a touch of class about the place, but it's welcoming rather than pretentious, with a strong community feel and plenty to keep both locals and visitors content.
The story of Tunbridge Wells really began in the 1600s when a natural spring with iron-rich waters was discovered. Word got out, and before long, the town was attracting royalty and fashionable society keen to ‘take the waters'. It flourished as a spa resort through the 18th and 19th centuries, with the elegant Pantiles promenade becoming the heart of social life. Although the spa trend eventually waned, the town's popularity never really faded, and its historic character still shapes much of what you see today.
There's loads to do around town. The Pantiles remains a big draw, lined with cafes, boutiques and galleries. There's a good mix of high street favourites and quirky independents throughout the centre. Calverley Grounds offers green space to unwind, while the Assembly Hall Theatre and Trinity Theatre bring in regular entertainment. If you like a bit of history, the Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery gives a proper look at the local story. And foodies won't go hungry – the choice of restaurants and pubs ranges from laid-back to fancy.
Wider Kent is packed with things to see and do. You've got Hever Castle and Penshurst Place nearby for a dose of Tudor and medieval splendour. Bedgebury Pinetum offers cycling and walking trails in a stunning woodland setting, and the countryside surrounding the Weald is perfect for weekend rambles. If you fancy a seaside outing, Hastings or Rye aren't too far, and Canterbury makes for a cracking day trip.
Getting to and from Royal Tunbridge Wells is pretty straightforward. The town has good rail links to London, with services to Charing Cross and Cannon Street taking just under an hour. Roads are decent too, with the A21 providing a direct route to the M25. Gatwick Airport is the nearest major airport, around 45 minutes away by car. Buses serve the town well, and you'll find taxis and local trains if you're venturing into the neighbouring villages or towns.
Kent, known as the Garden of England, lives up to its name with sweeping orchards, hop fields and an endless patchwork of greenery. But it's not all countryside – there are lively coastal towns, buzzing commuter spots, and plenty of history threaded through every corner. With its castles, cathedrals, country pubs and close proximity to London, it's got a bit of everything going on.
