Sheerness is a seaside town perched on the north-west coast of the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, where the River Medway meets the Thames Estuary. It's got that gritty charm you only find in coastal towns with a working port, but alongside the industry you'll find a sandy beach, a lively promenade, and a down-to-earth community. The sea breeze is constant, the skies feel a little bigger here, and life ticks along at a comfortable pace.

Historically, Sheerness grew up around the naval dockyard established in the 17th century. The town was originally a military outpost, but soon developed into a full-blown Royal Navy dockyard. By the Victorian era, it was drawing in holidaymakers with its beach and sea air, and many of the old buildings from that period still dot the town. Though the dockyard eventually closed, traces of maritime history are everywhere—especially around the Blue Town area, which has its own unique identity.

Sheerness has a decent spread of facilities considering its size. The seafront boasts a wide esplanade ideal for walking or cycling, with classic beach huts and views out to the busy waterway. There's a mix of independent shops, cafés, and pubs in the town centre, along with community hubs and green spaces like Beachfields Park. The Sheerness Heritage Centre is a good starting point if you're after local history. Not far off, the Barton's Point Coastal Park offers walking trails, birdwatching and family activities, while Eastchurch and Minster Abbey give you a taste of historic Kent. While you won't find a National Trust site right in the town, you don't need to go far to reach Sittingbourne or Faversham, where options like Belmont House and Mount Ephraim Gardens await.

Wider Kent really opens up once you cross the Sheppey Crossing. Canterbury is within easy reach for a day out, packed with heritage and good food. Then you've got Rochester with its castle and Dickensian charm, or the seaside towns of Whitstable and Margate if you fancy a bit more coast. Hever Castle, Sissinghurst Castle Garden and Ightham Mote—some of the National Trust's best-loved gems—are all doable with a bit of a drive.

As for getting there, Sheerness is at the end of the Sheerness Line, with direct train services to Sittingbourne and onward connections to London. The A249 connects the town to the M2 and M20, so road links are decent too. The nearest major airport is London Southend, just over the estuary, or there's Gatwick for more international flights. Local buses make getting around Sheppey and beyond fairly straightforward, especially if you're not driving.

Kent as a county has something for everyone—lush countryside, ancient towns, sandy beaches and more history than you can shake a stick at. Often dubbed the Garden of England, it's not just about apples and oast houses either—it's got vibrant towns, charming villages, and plenty of breathing space. Whether you're into castles, coastlines, or countryside walks, Kent makes it easy to dip in and out of it all.
