Staplehurst is a friendly, semi-rural town in the heart of Kent, surrounded by wide-open countryside and orchards. It has a bit of everything – a decent choice of shops and schools, plenty of community spirit, and the bonus of a direct train into London. The landscape's green and peaceful, and there's a pleasant balance between the slower pace of village life and the practicalities of modern living.
The town's roots run deep, stretching back to Saxon times, and it's even mentioned in the Domesday Book. Historically, it grew as an agricultural settlement, benefiting from fertile land and a position on the old drover routes. The 1865 Staplehurst rail crash brought national attention, notably involving Charles Dickens, who was aboard the train. Over time, the area has steadily expanded, with new housing and services blending into the older parts of town, while keeping that traditional Kentish character.
Around Staplehurst, you'll find just enough to keep things ticking over without losing the charm of a countryside setting. There's a handy high street, pubs, a well-used community centre, and schools nearby. The church of All Saints is a real centrepiece, surrounded by pretty homes and footpaths. Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens – a National Trust gem – is a short drive away, as is Leeds Castle, often dubbed the “loveliest castle in the world.” Not far off, you've also got Scotney Castle and the moated ruins of Bayham Abbey, both well worth a visit. For walking and wildlife, there are loads of footpaths and nature reserves tucked around the Weald.
Kent itself has no shortage of attractions, from coastal hotspots like Whitstable and Deal to bigger days out like Canterbury Cathedral or Dover Castle. Head west and you're into the Kent Downs, with rolling chalk hills and ancient woodlands. For families, Kent Life and the Hop Farm are easy drives and always a hit with the kids. If you're into gardens, history or classic country pubs, there's something in just about every direction.
Staplehurst station offers a straightforward commute to London Charing Cross and Cannon Street, making it a popular base for commuters. The A229 links the town to Maidstone and Hastings, and drivers can pick up the M20 or M25 with relative ease. Gatwick is the closest airport – about 45 minutes by car – so jetting off isn't a headache. Regular buses also serve nearby villages and towns, so getting around locally is simple enough, even if you don't drive.
Kent's known for its orchards, oast houses and sweeping countryside, but there's more to it than the “Garden of England” title suggests. It's a county of contrasts – rugged coastline, buzzing market towns, and chocolate-box villages all sit side by side. There's a strong sense of local identity in each place, but also a shared pride in the landscape, history and food – not to mention the sheer number of castles, gardens and historic sites packed into the area.
