Westerham is a charming market town tucked between the North Downs and the border with Surrey, full of character and surrounded by rolling countryside. It's a proper blend of history and everyday life, with cosy pubs, antique shops, and a green in the middle where locals sit with ice creams in summer. Though small, it's a place with a big personality, often drawing visitors thanks to its famous past residents and its postcard-worthy High Street.

The history of Westerham goes way back—there's been a settlement here since Roman times, though the town really took shape in the medieval period. Its location on a key coaching route meant it became a lively stopover point, and by the 18th century it was known for brewing and its thriving market. The town's best-known figure is undoubtedly Sir Winston Churchill, who lived at Chartwell just outside the town. There's also a statue of General Wolfe, another local lad made good, who was born in Westerham before heading off to military fame in Quebec. The place wears its history lightly but proudly.

Westerham's got a lovely High Street packed with independent shops, tearooms and proper old pubs. The Grasshopper on the Green is a popular local, and there's a real mix of eateries dotted about. Chartwell, Churchill's former home, is just a short drive out and is run by the National Trust—beautiful gardens, woodland walks and a peek into the life of one of Britain's most iconic figures. Quebec House is right in the town centre and managed by English Heritage, offering insight into Wolfe's early life. Nearby you've also got Emmetts Garden, another National Trust spot, and the sweeping views from Toys Hill. Plenty to fill a weekend without going far.

If you want to branch out a bit, Kent doesn't disappoint. Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, is not far off and makes for a great day out with its lake and maze. You could head to Leeds Castle, often dubbed the loveliest castle in the world. Canterbury's always a solid choice with its cathedral and winding streets, while the coast gives you Whitstable for oysters or Margate for a more classic seaside fix. The Kent Downs, part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offer brilliant walks and plenty of spots to stop for a pint with a view.

Getting to Westerham's pretty straightforward by car—it sits just off the A25 and is within easy reach of the M25. It doesn't have its own train station, but nearby Oxted and Sevenoaks have regular services into London. You can grab a taxi or bus from there to the town. Gatwick is the closest airport, just over half an hour away, which is handy if you've got visitors flying in. Local buses run through the town, and the surrounding lanes are ideal for walkers and cyclists looking for a scenic route through the hills.

Kent is a county that wears its identity with pride. Known as the Garden of England, it's full of orchards, hop fields and woodland, but also brimming with ancient towns, historic buildings and a coastline that's full of stories. You've got everything from Roman ruins and Norman castles to oast houses and chalk cliffs. The county's close enough to London to feel connected, yet still holds onto its own pace and personality. Whether you're here for a few days or putting down roots, Kent tends to leave a lasting impression.
