Leeds Castle in Kent is one of those places that really does live up to the hype. It's grand, peaceful, and set right in the middle of rolling countryside, surrounded by a lake that reflects its turrets like something off a postcard. Often called the “loveliest castle in the world,” it's a big draw for tourists, day-trippers, and anyone after a bit of fresh air and fairytale atmosphere. Whether you're exploring the grounds or just sitting with a coffee watching the swans glide by, there's something about it that just works.
The castle's history stretches back over 900 years. It began as a Norman stronghold and gradually transformed into a royal residence. It became a favourite of medieval queens, including Eleanor of Castile and Catherine of Aragon, who stayed here during her marriage to Henry VIII. Later, it passed into private hands and was eventually bought and restored by Lady Baillie in the 1920s, who turned it into a glamorous retreat for politicians, film stars and royals. Her legacy lives on in the furnishings, art, and the stylish but lived-in feel of the interiors. It's not just a shell—it's full of character.
The grounds around the castle are just as impressive as the building itself. You'll find gardens in every direction—formal ones, wild ones, even a maze with a grotto at the centre. There's a bird of prey centre, playgrounds for kids, a lovely café, and a smattering of picnic spots by the water. If you wander further afield, the surrounding area has a proper Kentish charm—think country pubs, sleepy villages and scenic walks. The Leeds village itself is a quiet, well-kept spot with timber-framed houses and a couple of good eateries. Broomfield and Hollingbourne aren't far either, with walks that climb up into the North Downs.
Kent's full of places worth visiting once you've ticked off the castle. Canterbury's packed with history, great for a day of cathedral-gazing and coffee breaks. If you fancy the coast, there's Whitstable with its oysters and working harbour, or Broadstairs with old-school seaside charm. Over near Tunbridge Wells, there's Scotney Castle and Groombridge Place, both beautiful in their own right. Walkers and wine lovers will enjoy the Kent Downs and the region's growing collection of vineyards and farm shops. There's always another detour to take.
Leeds Castle is easy to reach, especially if you're coming from London or the south-east. It's close to Junction 8 of the M20, just outside Maidstone. There's loads of parking and well-marked signs, so it's a doddle by car. The nearest train station is Bearsted, just a short taxi ride away, with regular services to and from London Victoria. If you're heading in from further afield, Gatwick is your best bet for air travel, though London City and Heathrow aren't that far either. Local buses run from Maidstone, and if you're cycling, there are some lovely scenic lanes in the area to take in.
Kent as a county has a real mix of coast and countryside, historic towns and pretty villages, castles, cathedrals, and coastlines. It's often called the Garden of England, and you can see why—orchards, hop gardens, and vineyards all thrive here. The county's also rich in stories, from Roman invaders to Tudor monarchs to wartime resilience. It's a place where ancient roads cut through fields, where you're never far from a teashop or a trail, and where the pace is just that little bit more relaxed. Whether you're after food, history, or just a quiet stroll, it's a great place to explore.
