Sturry is a pretty little village just to the north-east of Canterbury in Kent, nestled along the banks of the Great Stour. It's the kind of place where you'll find timber-framed cottages, cosy pubs and a pace of life that's slower than the nearby city. Though it's grown over the years, with newer developments and a steady trickle of commuters, it's still got a villagey charm that locals are proud of.
There's plenty of history woven into Sturry's quiet lanes. The village has its roots in Roman times, though it really took shape during the Saxon and Norman periods. Sturry was mentioned in the Domesday Book, and it grew around the medieval manor that once belonged to the monks of Canterbury. During the Second World War, it found itself on the front line of air raids, with pillboxes still dotted about as reminders. Over the centuries, it's moved from an agricultural base to a mix of residential and commuter life, always with one foot in the past.
These days, Sturry has a handful of handy local spots — a post office, a couple of takeaways, corner shops and a popular primary school. For a decent pub lunch, The Royal Oak's well worth a visit. Nearby, there's Howletts Wild Animal Park, a big hit with families, especially with its rare primates and open enclosures. If you're up for something with a bit more grandeur, head just a short drive away to the National Trust's Wildwood Trust or the beautiful Georgian estate of Goodnestone Park Gardens. English Heritage fans can explore the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury, just down the road. Whether you're after history, wildlife, or somewhere to stretch your legs, it's all within easy reach.
Further afield in Kent, there's no shortage of places to explore. Whitstable offers beach huts and oysters, while Dover has its white cliffs and the commanding castle overlooking the Channel. Leeds Castle near Maidstone is a real gem, often called the loveliest castle in the world, and it's easy to spend a whole day wandering through its grounds. You've also got the vineyards of the Weald, the rolling North Downs, and plenty of little market towns like Faversham and Tenterden full of character and local produce.
Getting to and from Sturry's a doddle. The village has its own train station with regular services to Canterbury, Ramsgate, and London. By car, it's just off the A28 and only a few minutes from the A2, which links you up with the M2 and the wider motorway network. Canterbury's a five-minute drive, while London is roughly an hour and a half away depending on the traffic. The closest major airport is London Southend, but Gatwick's not too far off either if you don't mind the drive. Buses run often, and you'll find good cycle routes if that's your thing.
Kent as a whole is often referred to as the Garden of England, and it's not hard to see why. Rolling countryside, historic towns, and miles of coastline give it a mix of old-world charm and lively communities. It's a county full of contrasts — coastal resorts, country pubs, busy commuter towns and pockets of deep rural tranquillity. There's a strong sense of identity here, shaped by centuries of trade, conflict and culture. Whether you're into walking, food, or just pottering about local markets, Kent's got something for you.
