Folkestone is a seaside town on the south-east coast of Kent, not far from the edge of the white cliffs. It's got that classic mix of coast and culture, with a creative buzz that's only grown in recent years. Once a busy ferry port, it's now reinvented itself as a spot that's just as much about art, food and a laid-back way of life as it is about its history and sea views.

The town's story goes back centuries. It started as a small fishing village, then grew into a major port thanks to its position near France. Folkestone was heavily used in both world wars, especially as a departure point for soldiers in WWI. Like many coastal towns, it had its ups and downs during the 20th century, but in more recent years it's seen a revival thanks to the arts, the redevelopment of the harbour area, and improved travel links.

There's a long stretch of shingle beach, a bandstand, a leafy park up on the Leas, and even a little cliff lift to take you between levels. For a small town, it really packs a punch.

If you fancy heading further afield, Kent has plenty to offer. You've got Canterbury with its towering cathedral, the historic dockyards at Chatham, the wildlife at Port Lympne, and charming towns like Whitstable and Deal. There's also the beautiful countryside of the Kent Downs and lots of walking trails that wind their way through picture-postcard villages.

Folkestone is well connected. It's right at the end of the M20 and is home to the Eurotunnel terminal at nearby Cheriton, which whisks you under the Channel to France in no time. High-speed trains from Folkestone Central can get you to London St Pancras in under an hour. The local bus network covers the nearby towns and villages, and the nearest airport is London Gatwick, which is a manageable drive or train trip away.

Kent's often called the Garden of England, and it's easy to see why. It's packed with orchards, hop gardens, vineyards and open countryside, while the coastline offers everything from quiet estuaries to bustling resort towns. There's a strong mix of history and modern living – castles and cathedrals on one hand, thriving towns and cities on the other.
