Located on the hills over Folkestone in east Kent, Hawkinge has developed from being just a village to becoming a thriving town but still retains some of its rural charm. The location is full of military history thanks to RAF Hawkinge, which played a vital role as a fighter station during World War II during the Battle of Britain; many remnants of this period can still be seen today throughout the village. The total population of the village is now approximately 9,000; many families and commuters choose to live here because of the open space and good transport links.
Both roads, the A260 and nearby M20 make travelling to/from the village very easy and there are two main forms of transport connecting both to London with very frequent high-speed service trains leaving from both Folkestone Central and Folkestone West Stations. Hawkinge has several parks, schools, shops (including several pubs and cafes) and provides good access to the Kent Downs where many different walking/cycling routes exist. Within easy reach are several major places to visit including; National Trust Sites such as the White Cliffs of Dover and South Foreland Lighthouse; and English Heritage sites like Dover Castle, Battle of Britain Memorial, and St Augustine’s Abbey. During the year Folkestone Harbour, Samphire Hoe, and the many beaches along the coastline (Channel) help to ensure that both locals and visitors alike continue to enjoy visiting the area throughout most of the year!
We hope you found this Hawkinge tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
