Chilham is an example of a village that seems to have been taken directly from the history books, with its position on the Stour river valley between Ashford and Canterbury, containing a picturesque village square of timber framed buildings and brick buildings which are all centuries old, and it dates back to before the Saxon period of time when it was famous for having large manorial residences and farm estates which are still prominent parts of today's landscape. There are about 1,200 residents in this village and it isn't set up for tourists even though it is extremely picturesque.

Chilham's train station provides links to Canterbury and Ashford as well as good road access to a lot of the East Kent area from the A28. People flock to Chilham for reasons such as the village square, the old church and riverside walks. Film crews frequently visit because they do not have to spend a lot of time dressing it for period movies. Some attractions near Chilham are Smallhythe Place (a National Trust Property) and substantial walking areas in Kent, and also some sites of English Heritage such as St Augustine’s Abbey and Richborough Roman Fort are all close to the village. Additionally, Canterbury Cathedral and Wye Downs, as well as the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty provide additional year-round reasons for visitors to pass through Chilham.
