Lydd is one of the most southerly towns in Kent, tucked away on the edge of Romney Marsh. It has a distinct character – a blend of historic charm, windswept landscapes and that slightly remote, seaside feel that gives it an edge. With its quirky mix of architecture, wide open skies and easy access to Dungeness, it's a place that appeals to those who like somewhere a bit off the beaten track.

Historically, Lydd goes right back to the Domesday Book, and its past is closely tied to the sea. Once a thriving member of the Cinque Ports, it played a key role in medieval trade and defence. The Church of All Saints is particularly striking – nicknamed the “Cathedral of the Marsh,” it dominates the skyline with its tall tower and centuries of history. Over time, as the coastline shifted, the town's fortunes changed, but it has kept its independent spirit.

In and around Lydd, you'll find a good handful of local shops, a few traditional pubs, a post office, takeaways and everyday essentials. Dungeness, just a short drive away, is a must-see – wild and desolate, with its lighthouse, miniature railway and quirky fishing huts. There's also the RSPB reserve, great for spotting all sorts of birdlife. A bit further out, you've got English Heritage's Camber Castle and the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. For National Trust fans, Smallhythe Place and Lamb House are both within reach and packed with character.

If you've got the time, Kent as a whole is packed with places worth seeing. Canterbury and its cathedral are a day out in themselves, while Dover Castle is steeped in military history and makes for a cracking visit. Leeds Castle is as picturesque as they come, and Sissinghurst Castle Garden is a favourite for anyone with a love for plants and poetry. Whitstable and Broadstairs offer proper seaside charm, while inland spots like Tenterden are great for a mooch and a coffee.

Getting to Lydd isn't complicated, even if it feels a bit tucked away. The nearest major train station is in Ashford, which links to London via high-speed rail. From Ashford, it's a drive or local bus down to Lydd. The A259 gives decent road access, and you're not far from the M20. London Gatwick is the nearest large airport, though there's also Lydd Airport on the doorstep – small but handy for certain flights and private aviation. Local buses run into Rye, New Romney and Ashford.

Kent's a bit of a gem when you look at it properly. Often called the Garden of England, it's a mix of rolling countryside, traditional hop farms, coastlines and characterful towns. It's full of history too, from Roman remains and medieval castles to Tudor manors and stately homes. It manages to feel very English and very individual at the same time, with loads of local pride and variety from village to village.
