Tenterden is a handsome market town tucked away in the Weald of Kent, known for its broad, tree-lined High Street and its mix of period architecture, boutique shops and independent cafés. It's got that easy charm that draws people in—plenty of character, but never trying too hard. The pace is relaxed, and you get the sense people actually know each other here. It feels well-kept and lived-in, with just enough going on to keep things interesting.

There's a long story behind Tenterden. It was once part of the ancient forest of Anderida, and its early importance came from its connection to the wool trade. By the 15th century, it had become one of the Cinque Ports—thanks to its link with the nearby town of Rye—though the sea's long since receded. The name ‘Tenterden' itself is thought to come from ‘Tenet Waraden', meaning the den or pasture of the men of Thanet. Over the centuries, it's seen smugglers, hop farmers and Victorian expansion. You can still spot traces of its maritime past in the local coat of arms and civic buildings.

Tenterden's High Street is the heart of the town, flanked by independent retailers, antique shops, pubs and bakeries. The Kent & East Sussex Railway starts here, running old steam trains through the countryside all the way to Bodiam Castle, which is a National Trust gem just over the border in East Sussex. A short drive out brings you to Smallhythe Place, once home to actress Ellen Terry, now a National Trust property filled with theatrical memorabilia. There's also Chapel Down Vineyard just outside town, well worth a tour and tasting. You're not far from Sissinghurst Castle Garden either, an English Heritage favourite for garden lovers and a peaceful day out.

If you're looking to explore further, Kent has plenty more up its sleeve. There's Leeds Castle near Maidstone, rich with history and surrounded by gardens and a moat. Canterbury is packed with medieval streets, the grand cathedral and a lively arts scene. Over on the coast, you've got the White Cliffs of Dover, plus the sea air and sandy beaches at Broadstairs or Whitstable. You could spend a day roaming Romney Marsh, visit the Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge, or head into the Kent Downs for proper walking country.

Getting to Tenterden is fairly straightforward. The town doesn't have a mainline train station, but you can hop on a train to Headcorn or Ashford and then it's a short taxi or bus ride in. Ashford International gives you quick access to London and the Eurostar. If you're driving, it's just off the A28, and well connected to the M20 and M25. Gatwick's the closest airport if you're flying in, with good road and rail links from there. Local buses run regularly and there's decent access for cyclists and walkers too.

Kent is a county of contrasts, often called the Garden of England thanks to its orchards, hop gardens and rolling farmland. It's a place where you'll find ancient villages tucked away in wooded valleys, bustling towns full of history, and stretches of dramatic coastline. Kent's always had one foot in the past and the other in the present. It's shaped by centuries of trade, invasion and innovation, and that legacy's still visible today—from grand castles and stately homes to the quiet charm of a village pub or a coastal fish shack.
