New Romney is a characterful town on the edge of Romney Marsh in south Kent, not far from the sea and surrounded by open skies and flat, windswept landscapes. It's got a quiet, old-fashioned charm, with a high street that still holds onto its historic look and feel, and a friendly pace that suits both locals and visitors looking for a slower pace of life. The town has all the essentials and a few hidden gems if you take the time to wander.

Back in the day, New Romney was a major medieval port, one of the original Cinque Ports, before the Great Storm of 1287 silted up the harbour and changed the coastline for good. These days it sits a good distance from the sea, but you can still spot signs of its seafaring past, especially around the impressive Norman church of St Nicholas, which sits strangely lower than the current street level due to the centuries of built-up silt.

There's plenty to enjoy around the town itself. The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is a huge draw – a miniature steam railway that runs all the way along the coast. You'll find little tea rooms, cosy pubs and the Romney Marsh Visitor Centre nearby, perfect for exploring the area's unique mix of wetlands, wildlife and open land. Not far from New Romney, you've got English Heritage's Camber Castle and National Trust's Dungeness National Nature Reserve and lighthouse, both great for a day out if you like big skies and striking scenery. Littlestone and Greatstone beaches are nearby too, offering quiet coastal walks or a dip when the weather's right.

Across wider Kent, there's no shortage of days out. You've got towering castles like Leeds Castle and Dover Castle, stunning gardens at Sissinghurst, and places like Canterbury with its cathedral and cobbled lanes. The Kent Downs are ideal for a bit of a hike, while spots like Whitstable, Broadstairs and Deal bring a more traditional seaside charm. Vineyards, ancient woodland, historic homes and scenic villages all make up the rich patchwork of the county.

New Romney isn't tricky to reach, though it feels a world away from city life. The A259 runs through the town, linking it to Folkestone and Hastings, while nearby roads take you inland towards Ashford and the M20. There's no direct train line, but you can get a mainline service to Ashford and then take a bus or drive the rest of the way. The miniature railway even links to Hythe, which is great fun if you're not in a rush. The closest airport is London Gatwick, with good road access south from there.

Kent as a county is a mix of coast, countryside and history. It's the sort of place where you can explore ancient churches in the morning and dip your toes in the sea by the afternoon. Known as the Garden of England, it's home to some of the most picturesque villages, fruit orchards, and oast houses you'll find. Whether you're after cliff-top walks, peaceful market towns or a bit of old-world charm, Kent delivers it in spades.
