Dover is a coastal town in Kent that's probably best known for its iconic white cliffs and bustling port. It's perched right on the edge of England, facing out across the Channel to France, and plays a big role in travel and trade. The town's got a no-nonsense, practical feel to it, but look a little closer and you'll find plenty of character, a few surprises, and a strong sense of history running through its streets.
Dover's roots stretch back thousands of years. It's been a key gateway to the continent since Roman times, with its natural harbour making it an obvious spot for military, trade, and migration. The Romans built a lighthouse here, parts of which still survive, and later the Normans added their own stamp with the mighty Dover Castle, which still dominates the skyline. Throughout the Second World War, Dover found itself on the frontline, with tunnels dug deep into the cliffs and regular bombing raids to contend with. It's a place that's seen its fair share of drama and played a central role in Britain's story.
There's more to do in town than many people realise. Dover Castle's a must, of course, with its secret wartime tunnels and sweeping views. Then there's the Dover Museum, home to a Bronze Age boat that's older than the Pyramids. If you fancy a walk, the White Cliffs themselves are just on the edge of town, with footpaths leading along the chalky headlands. You'll also find independent shops, a good mix of pubs and cafés, and plenty of spots to soak up a bit of sea air. Dover's had a bit of investment in recent years too, with the waterfront and town centre getting some welcome attention.
Kent as a whole is packed with places worth a wander. Canterbury isn't far, with its cathedral and old city walls. Head inland and you've got pretty villages, vineyards, and market towns like Faversham and Tenterden. Down the coast, there's Folkestone's arty vibe and the pebbled beaches of Deal and Walmer. Leeds Castle, Hever Castle, and Chartwell – Churchill's old home – are all within reach. It's a county full of castles, coastline, orchards and ancient woodland.
Getting to Dover's fairly straightforward. The A2 connects it directly to Canterbury and London, while the M20 via Folkestone is another handy route. Dover Priory station links to London St Pancras in just over an hour on the high-speed service. If you're travelling by ferry, the port's right in town and runs services to Calais and Dunkirk. The nearest airport is London Gatwick, about 75 minutes away by road, and Heathrow or London City are also viable options depending on where you're coming from. Local buses run between Dover and surrounding towns, and you'll find decent local taxi services too.
Kent's often called the Garden of England for good reason. With its rolling countryside, hop fields, orchards and picture-postcard villages, there's a lot to explore. It's steeped in history too – from Roman villas and medieval castles to coastal forts and Victorian piers. The county's got something for just about everyone, whether you're after walking trails, quirky shops, grand houses, or just a pint in a quiet country pub. And with such strong transport links, it's no surprise it draws both tourists and London commuters.
