The small maritime town of Queenborough is located in north Kent, on the isle of Sheppey, next to the busy waterways where the River Medway converges with the Swale. There are some remnants of its historical seafaring past (such as the many fishing boats) and architecture (many of the buildings are brick) that convey a certain rustic charm. King Edward III founded the town in the 14th century when he constructed a castle to provide protection for the Thames Estuary against attack. Although the castle has been demolished long ago, Queenborough remains a quaint little community that still retains its coastal history. Approximately 3,500 people currently reside in Queenborough, the majority of whom either work on the isle or commute to Sittingbourne or Medway.
Queenborough railway station connects with the rail system in Kent, while the A249 allows easy access to the M2 and London. The areas around the harbour, creek-side walking paths and the marshes are very popular with both bird watchers and boaters. Nearby attractions include Cobham Wood and the White Cliffs (National Trust properties) and Upnor Castle and Holly Chantry (English Heritage). Leysdown Beach, Elmley Nature Reserve and the coastline of the Isle of Sheppey receive many visitors year-round.
