Ratby sits on the western fringe of Leicester, where the built-up city starts giving way to fields and the wooded landscape of Charnwood. Home to roughly 4,500 people, Ratby is a village and civil parish within the Hinckley and Bosworth district. It has Saxon origins and later became known for framework knitting, with quarrying and nearby coal mining also providing work for local people. The village still has a busy little centre, with a selection of shops, pubs, schools, healthcare, churches and sports clubs all fairly close together. The A46 and M1 are only a few minutes away, making Leicester and the wider county easy enough to reach. Bradgate Park is a favourite nearby escape, while the National Trust's Stoneywell offers something more intimate. English Heritage looks after Kirby Muxloe Castle, just down the road - so that is also worth a look if you are in the area.
