Whitwick is a large village and civil parish that is located about two miles north of Coalville in the north-west Leicestershire district. Whitwick has a rugged sort of character, sitting among the hills and old quarrying country of north-west Leicestershire. Around 8,000 people live in the wider area, which once depended heavily on coal mining, stone and related industries for its survival. Traces of an earlier medieval settlement remain too, including the site of Whitwick Castle. The A511 skirts nearby, meaning that Coalville, the M1 and Ashby-de-la-Zouch are easy enough to reach, while Loughborough offers useful rail connections for train lovers. Shops, pubs, schools and leisure facilities are spread around the village. Charnwood Forest provides plenty of walking country, National Trust-owned Stoneywell lies to the east, while English Heritage's Ashby de la Zouch Castle is close enough for an outing if you like abit of history.
