Brightlingsea - Tucked away on the Essex coast, Brightlingsea is a small town with bags of character. It's perched right on the edge of the Colne Estuary, offering a mix of sailing heritage, sea air, and a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. The place has that slightly windswept, coastal charm – the sort where you can hear gulls in the morning and catch a glimpse of the tide coming in from most spots in town. It's not huge, but it's got enough going on to keep locals content and visitors intrigued.
The history of Brightlingsea goes way back, with Roman roots and a long-standing connection to the sea. It was once a thriving fishing port, then became well known for its oyster beds and shipbuilding. By the 19th century, it had found a niche as a yachting centre, and you'll still see plenty of boats bobbing about today. The town played its part in both World Wars, especially as a base for minesweepers in WWII. Its maritime story is never far from view – just take a stroll past the old anchor on the quay or visit the Hard, and it all starts to fall into place.
For a small town, Brightlingsea's got a fair bit going on. The beach is a draw, especially in summer, with its colourful beach huts and wide promenade. There's a lido, open during the warmer months, and the marina's always busy with life. You'll find walking and cycling routes along the coast and countryside, including a ferry that runs over to Point Clear and East Mersea during the season. Not far from town, National Trust gems like Paycocke's House and Grange Barn in Coggeshall offer a lovely step back in time, while English Heritage's St Osyth Priory is a short hop away and well worth a look when open. The wider Tendring Peninsula has several nature reserves and spots like Cudmore Grove Country Park on Mersea Island, perfect for a quiet wander or picnic.
Essex as a whole is full of surprises. People often think of it as all motorways and shopping centres, but it's much more layered than that. You've got the flat open farmland of the north, the ancient woodlands of Epping Forest, the winding creeks and estuaries of the coast, and plenty of charming market towns dotted in between. Chelmsford's the county town and has grown into a bustling city, while places like Colchester, Britain's oldest recorded town, mix Roman ruins with modern living. There's a real blend of old and new, and if you venture off the main roads, you'll find hidden villages, windmills, and churches that have been standing for centuries.
Getting to Brightlingsea's pretty straightforward. It doesn't have its own train station, but Wivenhoe and Alresford are nearby, both linking into the mainline at Colchester, which connects to London Liverpool Street in just under an hour. From there, it's about a 15-minute drive or a local bus into town. The A133 runs nearby, making road travel simple enough from Colchester or Clacton. For those flying in, London Stansted is the closest major airport, about 40 miles away, and there are regular trains and hire cars available if you're heading down from there. There's also the option of coastal access via the Colne for the more nautically minded.
