Holland-on-Sea is a quiet coastal village just east of Clacton, sitting right on the Essex coastline with sandy beaches and a stretch of seafront that's far more peaceful than its livelier neighbour. It's a lovely little spot for those who want the sea breeze without the crowds, with a strong sense of community and a slower pace of life. Popular with retirees, dog walkers and anyone who enjoys a good coastal ramble, it's the sort of place where people still say hello when they pass you on the street.
The village's history isn't especially ancient, but it has a charm of its own. Holland-on-Sea was largely farmland until the early 20th century when seaside holidays began booming and Clacton started to spill outward. The coming of the railway to nearby towns made the coast more accessible, and Holland gradually developed into a holiday retreat and then into a residential village. While much of the village is now made up of 20th-century houses, there are still a few older buildings dotted about, and the layout of the roads and lanes gives hints of its semi-rural beginnings.
As for things to see and do, the beach is the big draw. The sands are clean, the promenade is well-kept, and it's ideal for a relaxed walk, a paddle, or a sit-down with a bag of chips. There are plenty of benches to enjoy the view, and beach huts line the coast in cheerful rows. The nearby Holland Haven Country Park is a lovely spot too—perfect for birdwatchers, dog walkers or anyone after a bit of peace and quiet in natural surroundings. A short trip into Clacton offers more traditional seaside fun, with its pier, amusements and fairground rides. Just inland, you'll find English Heritage's Jaywick Martello Tower, a Napoleonic-era defensive fort that's now used for exhibitions and events. The National Trust's Bourne Mill in Colchester isn't too far either and makes a lovely day out with its millpond, wildlife and peaceful gardens.
Zooming out across Essex, there's plenty more to explore. Colchester offers a cracking mix of Roman heritage, modern shopping and green spaces. Dedham and Flatford bring you into Constable Country, full of countryside walks and charming villages. Maldon, with its maritime feel and riverside pubs, is another favourite. If you fancy heading further along the coast, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze are both lovely, with the latter offering fossil hunting and nature trails along the Naze cliffs.
Holland-on-Sea doesn't have a train station of its own, but Clacton-on-Sea station is just a few minutes away by car or bus and connects to London Liverpool Street via Colchester. The main road in and out is the A133, which links up with the A120 for quick routes to Colchester, Harwich and beyond. London Stansted is the closest major airport—around an hour's drive—and offers both domestic and European routes. Local buses run regularly, with services into Clacton, Walton, and other surrounding areas, making it easy to get around without much hassle.
Essex itself is one of those counties that surprises you. You've got everything from busy commuter towns to sleepy villages, ancient woodlands to sandy beaches. It's a place with deep roots and lots of contrast—market towns steeped in history, pretty estuary walks, wide skies over flat farmland, and little corners where time seems to move a bit more gently. Whether you're after something quiet and coastal or buzzing and urban, Essex fits the bill without trying too hard.
