Shoeburyness sits right at the eastern tip of Southend-on-Sea, where the land runs out and the Thames meets the sea. It's got a laid-back, end-of-the-line feel to it, with wide skies, shingle beaches, and a proper sense of space. It's part of the Southend borough but has its own quiet personality—more relaxed than the bright lights of Southend, with just enough going on to keep things interesting. You'll find a mix of families, day-trippers and locals who've lived there for generations, and it all ticks along at a calm, coastal pace.
The town's got roots stretching back centuries, though it really started to grow in the 19th century when it became an important military base. The Shoebury Garrison was home to the Royal Artillery and helped defend the Thames Estuary, with much of that heritage still visible in old barracks, gun emplacements, and Victorian housing. The population these days is just over 20,000, spread between the quieter old town and the more residential areas of North Shoebury. There's a sense of history in the air, especially down by the Garrison, which has had a new lease of life in recent years as housing, studios and creative spaces.
You don't have to look far for things to do in Shoeburyness. East Beach is popular for swimming, picnics and paddleboarding, and feels a world away from the buzz of Southend seafront. There's Shoebury Park with its duck pond and woodlands, plus Gunners Park, which is great for walking and spotting wildlife among the old military remains. Just around the coast, you've got Southchurch Hall—a lovely medieval manor house now open to the public—and Prittlewell Priory. National Trust-wise, you're within reach of Rayleigh Mount, and English Heritage's Hadleigh Castle offers cracking views over the estuary and a proper slice of history. The wider seafront trail all the way back to Leigh-on-Sea makes for a scenic wander with plenty of pitstops.
Essex doesn't disappoint if you're after variety. Head inland and you'll find old market towns like Maldon with its boats and salt flats, or take a trip up to Colchester, packed with Roman ruins, a zoo and a castle. There's the artsy side of places like Wivenhoe and Dedham, and plenty of seaside charm in Walton, Frinton and Clacton if you fancy another day on the coast. You'll also find peaceful countryside villages and historic halls tucked away down leafy lanes, from Audley End House to Hylands Park.
Shoeburyness is the end of the line for the c2c train from London Fenchurch Street, so it's surprisingly easy to reach despite feeling quite out on its own. Trains run regularly, and you're in the capital in just over an hour. Southend Airport is around 20 minutes away by car or local train, offering flights to a mix of European cities. Roads are well linked too, with the A13 running back towards London and beyond. Buses serve local routes to Thorpe Bay, Southchurch and Southend town centre, making it easy to get about without a car.
Essex as a county doesn't fit into one neat box. It's a patchwork of contrasts—industrial waterfronts, ancient woodland, commuter towns, seaside resorts and sleepy villages all rubbing shoulders. There's an edge to it, a bit of brashness in places, but that's balanced by beauty spots and a deep well of history. Whether you're after heritage, wildlife, shopping or just a good pub with a view, Essex has plenty tucked away in its winding backroads and busy town centres.
